I hadn’t read a book by Ann Brashares since the release of the third SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELLING PANTS book released years ago. Needless to say, when I heard she had a new book — and a sci-fi tale with time travel, no less! — I was quite excited.
Time travel is a tricky topic for fiction, always seeming to work either really well or not at all; there’s no middle-ground. And this book is no exception: everything related to the time travel is well done. Everything else, however…meh.
That’s the best word for this book: meh. It was good and had moments of entertainment, but I felt oddly detached from the whole experience. I wasn’t caught up in the tension, nor moved by the emotional journey of the characters.
This book will surely appeal to most readers, and I would even recommend it to people whom I think will enjoy it, but it didn’t quite make a lasting impact enough for me.
