Review: Shadowshaper

Shadowshaper
Shadowshaper by Daniel José Older

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Solid 3.5/5*

I appreciated the magical realism of this novel, as well as the fantastic narration by Anika Noni Rose, which definitely added to the atmosphere of the story. I think the reason I can’t rate this any higher is my own inability to become truly immersed in the world or feel a connection to the characters. They’re certainly fresh and well-drawn, but I just felt particularly distant from them — like there was a piece of glass between me and them.

That being said, it is certainly a well-written urban magical-realism novel with a cultural perspective that does not get enough “screen time” in the world of YA literature. So I do recommend giving this book a go! 🙂
